Thermal management of batteries

With increasing power density and decreasing installation space the requirements in regard to heat management of batteries and battery packs is also rising. For this reason, films are used for thermal coupling respectively de-coupling of components in close proximity to one another.

Thereby, thermal management of a battery always has to be adapted to the specific variation. Low temperatures in winter have a negative impact on the conductivity of the electrolytes and the battery has to be heated. On the other hand, due to the tight configuration of the cell, cooling is always necessary for space-saving lithium-ion-batteries.

Perfect temperature range

Polifibra offers flexible basic films which are able to keep lithium-ion-batteries within the optimum temperature range of 20 °C to 40 °C:

1. Electrically heated synthetic films

To ensure a long service life of cells and to be able to make use of the full battery capacity during the winter such cells must be heated. Suitable for heat control are thin synthetic films with in-build resistance heating. They are installed close to or, if required, laminar in between the cells und are operated via an electrical outlet.

2. Films for heat dissipation

For lithium-ion-batteries the following general rule applies: service life is halved if the temperature is (permanently) 10 °C above the optimum operating temperature. By including thermally conductive films or nonwovens in between the cells such are thermally tied in and may be cooled by means of refrigerants.
