New Composite for Battery Cells: POLIFERAN Starts Marketing
06.11.2025 - A collaborative and groundbreaking initiative by Polifibra Folien GmbH, Wickeder Group, and SIKA Technology GmbH has reached a significant milestone in the evolution and manufacturing of cutting-edge materials for battery cell production. Since its inception in 2023, the three partners have been diligently developing a top-performing, tailored composite called POLIFERAN. Their unwavering commitment to quality, utility, and industrial worth has driven this project forward. In addition, the project is being scientifically supervised and analysed by the RTA Aachen.
Starting Point: Steel-Aluminium Composite
Everything started with the material developed by Wickeder, called FERAN. This material is made up of layered steel coated with aluminium on both sides. This combination unites mechanical robustness and tensile strength of steel with the advantageous surface properties of aluminium. The material is highly resistant and has excellent thermoforming properties. This makes it less susceptible to external influences, which is an important requirement for state-of-the-art battery cell production.
From Raw Material to Functional Composite
Polifibra, in turn, is responsible for the precise cutting of the FERAN and initiated the next processing stage, which led to the inclusion of Leipzig-based SIKA. SIKA specialises in sophisticated lamination technologies and laminated the FERAN with three precisely defined additional layers. This ultimately led to the creation of a new composite called POLIFERAN. Lamination not only creates new material properties, but also allows for tailored adaptation to various uses.
The cutting-edge material
POLIFERAN boasts remarkable functional benefits:
- Exceptional thermoforming aptitude for intricate moulds in cell housings;
- robust tensile strength and steadfast mechanical resistance, due to its steel interior;
- exceptional resistance to external stressors, particularly in demanding industrial settings.
First Application in the Electronics Sector
After being cut to size and modification by Polifibra, the finished composite POLIFERAN is delivered directly to the customer. The marketing phase began with the presentation at the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart. All three project partners, Wickeder, Polifibra and SIKA, are actively engaging with their long-standing clients, introducing the new composite system.
Concentrating on the multitude, often specialised battery applications, e.g. in electronics, in the tools sector or in stationary energy storage solutions. The mobile phone industry was the first direct customer for POLIFERAN, highlighting the potential of the new composite in creating compact, advanced cell formats.
POLIFERAN – New Material Solution for Cell Production
Through the joint effort of three seasoned businesses, POLIFERAN is introducing a cutting-edge, production-ready material boasting impressive functionality, workability, and adaptability. This material is marketed not just for its exceptional properties, but also for its versatility in addressing a multitude of applications. A powerful message of collaboration-driven innovation ‘Made in Germany’.
