Spiral-wound end caps for industrial application

31.03.2019 - Whether used in the automotive industry, in medical technology or in the manufacture of household appliances the design, design variations and the scope of application of spiral wound tubes and end caps is rather diverse. End caps with different types of closures are industrially used to attach components, reduce noise or protect against contamination for example. Application examples are: PTC sensors, capacitors, industrial sensors, thermistors.

Polifibra Folien GmbH, headquartered in Limburg a.d. Lahn in Germany, a specialist for film and seal solutions, provides suitable and custom-made end caps for different applications. Spiral-wound end caps are available with ultrasonically-welded or spot-welded seals and “bull nose”-welds. Also available are valve caps with a fastener. Size, type and design of the caps can be tailored to customer needs as well as areas of application and manufactured individually.

Please find below an overview including details and advantages of each type of closure:

Spiral-wound cap with ultrasonically-welded seal

Spiral-wound cap with ultrasonically-welded seal
Spiral-wound caps with an ultrasonically-welded seal provide an impermeable seal which ensures quick and perfect positioning. When made out of shrinking polyester the cap can additionally be fixed if heat is applied. Caps are available with an inner diameter of 2 up to 70 mm, with thicknesses of 100 to 600µ and standard length of weld between 4 and 5 mm, other length may be provided upon request.

Spiral-wound end cap with ultrasonically-spot-welded seal

The advantage of spiral-wound caps with an ultrasonically-spot-welded seal lies, compared to customary ultrasonic seals, in the narrowness of the weld, which runs the entire length of the tube. This article also allows for quick and perfect positioning due to the shrinkability of the caps. Spot-welded caps are available with an inner diameter of 4 up to 30 mm, with wall thicknesses of 100 to 600µ and standard length of weld between 4 and 5 mm, other length may be provided upon request.

Spiral-wound end cap with “bull nose” welding

Spiral-wound end cap with “bull nose” welding
Spiral-wound caps with “bull nose” seal (openly shrunk) allow for a reduction in tube diameter at one end of the tube, which simplifies fitting of the tube between copper coils in electric motors, thereby preventing possible damage to enamelled wires. Due to the “bull nose” seal the end cap retains the same diameter as the tube in the area of weld, which in turn reduces space requirements. This article also allows for quick and perfect positioning due to the shrinkability of the caps. “Bull nose” caps are available with an inner diameter of 5 up to 12 mm, with wall thicknesses of 100 to 500 µ and standard length of weld again between 4 and 5 mm, other length may be provided upon request.

Spiral-wound valve end caps with fastener

Valve caps feature a fastener that ensures easy fitting of seals in mechanical components with sharp edges and prevents damage to gaskets. They are also used to protect O-rings from damage and simplify the fitting in valves of internal combustion engines. In addition, the fastener prevents slippage of the cap on the valve. On top of that, the cap is used in tyre production when fitting valves in order to prevent the metal parts of the valve damaging the tyre. Valve caps are available with an inner diameter of 5 up to 12 mm, with wall thicknesses of 75 to 150µ, and length starting from 7 mm. The length of the fasteners ranges from 2 to 5 mm.
